COOKIE DOUGH & LAURIE WOOLEVER
+ exclusive signed copies of In for Dinner, just for you x
Forgive me for taking the liberty, but I’m going to assume that if you are a regular reader of this newsletter, then you are somewhat of a food enthusiast, perhaps even a fan of food writing. I might go as far to say, that I’d assume most of you have read some of Anthony Bourdain’s work, most probably Kitchen Confidential.
I don’t know about you, but when I read that book, it changed something within me. Up until very recently, I hadn’t encountered another food memoir that had touched me as much, that was until I read Care and Feeding, by this week’s interviewee, Laurie Woolever. It’s not coincidence or surprise that Laurie’s writing evoked a similar feeling within me as that of Bourdain’s work, she worked alongside him for close to a decade. Laurie has had a wide and varying career, but perhaps her longest stint was, in her words, as “the lieutenant to the late author, TV host and producer Anthony Bourdain.” Laurie co authored two books with him and since authored the best selling ‘Bourdain The Definitive Oral Biography’.
Care and Feeding is Laurie’s first memoir, and not only does it tell the full story of her varied and specific career, she also deep dives into her personal life with searing honesty and hindsight. I so often read food memoirs by men, and I have enjoyed lots of them, but I felt a particular kinship with Laurie in her story, having also been a PA myself. I can say that I laughed out loud a number of times and that Laurie has a wit and charisma to her writing that make it hard to put down. If it’s not clear enough already, I think this is a brilliant book and one that you should all read, if you have the smallest speck of interest in any of the above.
Now, before we get into the interview, I have a very special and exclusive offer, just for you, my readers…
I’ve partnered with BookBar, one of my favourite independent bookshops in London on signed copies of my book In for Dinner. They will only be available until April 17th - so now is the time to snap them up. If you are planning to buy the book, it would mean the world to me if you chose to support an independent book shop like BookBar - they are the life blood of the book world and the best people to buy from in my opinion. You can get exclusive signed copies of In for Dinner here.
Now, make yourself a cup of tea, or pour yourself a glass of wine, depending on what time you are reading this, and please enjoy my conversation with Laurie.
Sending love, Rosie x
